Froebel College takes its name from Friedrich Froebel, founder of the Kindergarten movement. Froebel believed that all children learn by activity and play and that teaching should be respectful and guided by the teacher in response to the child's activities. The college places an important emphasis on the creative arts in the education of primary school children. Froebel believed that through activities children can learn to overcome many of life's difficulties, come to respect one another, the world they live in and begin to live in harmony with fellow citizens.
In April 2010, a new partnership between Froebel College and NUI Maynooth was announced. From September 2010, all entering students in Froebel programmes will be NUI Maynooth students. In September 2013, Froebel College will move to a brand-new, purpose-built Froebel centre on the Maynooth campus. It is envisaged that students will then have the opportunity to share many modules with other education and arts students. Until September 2013, all courses will be taught on the Blackrock campus, but students will be registered as Maynooth students and will enjoy the right to use the library and other services and facilities of the Maynooth campus as well as those of the Blackrock campus.
Froebel College is proud of its long association with Trinity College, Dublin. This association will continue for students who are currently enrolled at Froebel College.
The College, a Catholic College, under the Trusteeship of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters, strives to be a Froebel community promoting the uniqueness, creativity and dignity of each student and staff member. It is dedicated to providing the highest quality teacher education to meet the developing needs of the Irish primary school system.
