Froebel Students awarded First Steps Reading Certificates
23 February 2010Fourteen students from Froebel College completed a seven-week module in First Steps Reading in February 2010. This is the first group of students in the College who have been afforded the opportunity to obtain a First Steps Certificate. The students attended lectures and engaged in teaching reading in schools using the First Steps methods over the course of the seven week period.
Currently all DEIS schools in Ireland are offered support and training in First Steps through the Primary Professional Development Service (PPDS). In introducing this module for the students, the College endeavoured to prepare a cohort of students who will be well-positioned to use the First Steps Reading resource upon entering the profession. First Steps is a rich resource based on sound theory and research that helps schools and teachers address current literacy challenges in reading. It provides a broad repertoire of processes to support teachers to link assessment, teaching and learning. It offers a comprehensive range of practical teaching and learning experiences. The student's feedback on the module content was extremely positive and they look forward to implementing more of their strategies on their upcoming Teaching Practice Placement.
