Gaeltacht Entry MH002

Up to 10% of the places available on primary teacher education courses in the colleges of education may be reserved for Gaeltacht applicants. To qualify as a Gaeltacht applicant, the person must be resident in an officially-designated Gaeltacht area and it must be confirmed that the normal language of the home is Irish.

For entry to the course due to commence in September 2012, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will accept and check the CAO list of applicants against their records of families who were in receipt of a grant under Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge. Applicants whose families did not apply for a grant under Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge but who do reside in a Gaeltacht area will be interviewed by officials from Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to establish if they meet the second condition of entry i.e. the normal language of home is Irish.

It is intended that the criteria and verification process will be reviewed and a new process put in place before the CAO process commences for the 2013/14 academic year.

From September 2010 until September 2013, all the courses in the B. Ed. programme will be on the Blackrock campus. These include:

Since September 2010, all new Froebel College courses have been accredited by NUI Maynooth and our students are registered as NUI Maynooth students. Our current third year and fourth year B.Ed. students continue their Trinity College accredited degree courses.

Until June 2013, Froebel College courses will take place on the Blackrock campus. Over the summer of 2013, Froebel College of Education will move to the NUI Maynooth Kildare campus, and from September 2013 all courses will be delivered on the NUI Maynooth campus, except for a few sessions of the BA in Early Childhood course which, as currently is also the case, take place at Early Childhood Ireland site in Tallaght.

For those students who have begun the B.Ed. before September 2010, the optional fourth year for the purpose of obtaining an Honours Degree from Trinity College may be undertaken at any time after the ordinary Degree has been completed. Starting in September 2010 all four years of lectures for the B.Ed. degree will be delivered on the Froebel Blackrock campus. The fourth year lectures will be held in the afternoons, so teaching positions may be held by those who follow the course. Students who successfully undertake this year may proceed to postgraduate studies.

For those who begin their studies in September 2010 or later, the B.Ed. programme will be a full, four year Level 8 Honours Degree programme accredited by NUI Maynooth. In September 2013, Froebel College of Education will move to a new, purpose-built centre for education on the NUI Maynooth campus. The fourth year of the 2010 entering B.Ed. class will then be taught along with the other years on the Maynooth campus. After the Teaching Council revised regulations will come into effect in the Spring of 2013, Level 7 degrees will not be sufficient to be considered qualified for primary teaching. Thus, the question of teaching during the morning and then continuing a fourth year course in the afternoon will not arise.

For those who already have a three year B.Ed degree from Froebel and wish to do the Senior Sophister year beginning Sept 27, 2010, we are now receiving applications. In 2010-2011, the 4th year course lectures will run in the first semester on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Thursdays from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. In the second semester, the lecture courses will run on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Thursdays from 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. This schedule is designed to permit those who hold a daytime teaching position to also take part in the course. 

All students will be required to pay a Registration Fee which is currently set at €1500 for the whole year. Free tuition fees for this programme are available to students who have not already begun another Level 8 progamme.

Applicants must apply directly to the Central Applications Office (CAO). The CAO Course Code is MH001. For Gaeltacht candidates only, the CAO Course Code is MH002. Points are calculated on one Leaving Certificate only but the three qualifying subjects of Grade C3 in Higher Level Irish and the grades in English and Mathematics may be achieved in other Leaving Certificate examination(s) but will not be counted for points.

Such groups include underrepresented school leavers, mature students, students with disabilities, members of the travelling community, and students from new Irish communities.
